The Asunta Case: Why Asunta was Murdered by her Parents?

Netflix series The Asunta Case is based on the true story of the adopted Chinese girl Asunta. Alfonso and Rosario adopted her from China and brought her to Spain. They were a happy family until both divorced and Rosario started to take care of Asunta alone. Asunta was found dead by police on a roadside. She died due to an overdose of lorazepam by her parents. Everyone was stunned by Asunta’s death and curious to know why Asunta was murdered by her parents.

Why Asunta was Murdered by her Parents?

Asunta had a very good bond with her parents Alfonso Basterra Porto and Rosario Porto since the time of adoption. But when Rosario was suffering from depression, she had an affair with a businessman she met during work. When Alfonso came to know about her affair, they had fights and eventually got divorced. Alfonso and Rosario started to live separately and Asunta lived with her mother.

After a while, Rosario struggled to take care of the Asunta alone. Her depression got more severe. Asunta also spent a lot of time with a caretaker during her summer break. Alfonso moved to a house two streets away from Rosario and they decided to care of Asunta together. Meanwhile, they started to give her a white powder (lorazepam) to Asunta which made her dizzy.

The most possible reason for Asunta’s murder by her parents Alfonso and Rosario is they no longer need her and taking care of her become a burden for them. Both of them were so busy in their own lives and Rosario was very disturbed emotionally as well due to complications in her relationship with her new boyfriend.

Real Alfonso and Rosari never admitted to murdering their own adopted daughter. But all witnesses and proofs were enough to find them guilty. Both of them were sentenced to jail for killing Asunta.
