Former Army Chief Pervez Musharraf Death Penalty in Treason Case

Pervez Musharraf, former Chief of Pakistan Army and President of Pakistan sentenced the death penalty by Special Court of Pakistan in the high treason case. Pervez Musharraf suspended the constitution of Pakistan and imposed a state of emergency in Pakistan in 2007. On 17 November 2019, three judges panel found ex-army general guilty in the treason case.

Pervez Musharraf is ex-chief of Pakistan Army and former president of Pakistan. These days Musharraf lives in Dubai. He is hospitalized in Dubai and is suffering from disease amyloidosis.

This is the first time in the history of Pakistan that a former Chief of Army staff is sentenced to the death penalty. Pervez Musharraf team can still appeal the decision of the special court in the High Court of Pakistan.

Treason case against Pervez Musharraf was filed in 2013 by the government. In the treason case, Musharraf was charged with imposing of state of emergency in Pakistan in 2007. This decision led to nationwide protests and disturbed the all democratic process in Pakistan. Then later in 2008 he resigned and went abroad. Since then Musharraf is living in London and Dubai. Even after the order from the court, he did not return to Pakistan.

In November 2019, a video message by Pervez Musharraf was recorded while he was in the bed in a hospital in Dubai. He talked about the treason case in his video message. In his video clip, he said, “I served the nation and made the decision for the betterment of the country”.

Pervez Musharraf’s death penalty news has divided Pakistani nations into categories. Some Pakistani Political parties are appreciating the decision by the special court of Pakistan. They say that it’s the victory of democracy over dictatorship in Pakistan. But some people are opposing this decision.
